OMMT Organic Modified Montmorillonite CAS 68953‑58‑2 Nanoclay Reinforcing Filler for Epoxy PU Polymer Composite

OMMT Organic Modified Montmorillonite (CAS 68953‑58‑2) is surface‑modified nanoscale layered silicate powder. When properly compounded and dispersed inside epoxy or polyurethane matrix under high‑shear processing, the stacked silicate layers are partially exfoliated and intercalated at nanometer level. The distributed silicate nanosheets form physical barrier networks within the polymer. It effectively enhances tensile modulus, flexural strength and heat‑distortion temperature of polymer composi

Product Overview

OMMT Organic Modified Montmorillonite, CAS 68953‑58‑2, is produced from purified natural montmorillonite through organic cation modification. This nanoclay reinforcing filler is specially developed for epoxy and polyurethane‑based polymer composite materials. Unlike conventional micron‑size mineral fillers, OMMT features layered silicate crystal structure. Under suitable high‑shear mixing and thermal processing conditions, the organic modified clay undergoes intercalation and partial exfoliation. Thin silicate nanosheets are dispersed uniformly throughout the continuous polymer matrix. These randomly oriented nanoscale silicate platelets construct tortuous diffusion paths inside resin. This tortuous path effect slows down penetration of water vapor and gaseous molecules, delivering improved barrier properties for the finished composite. Meanwhile, well‑dispersed nanoclay acts as rigid reinforcing domains, raising flexural modulus, tensile strength and thermal‑deformation resistance of cured epoxy and PU materials. It also brings moderate improvement on anti‑abrasion and flame‑retardant characteristics. The product maintains consistent batch‑to‑batch quality for composite compounding, resin casting and FRP manufacturing.

Key Features

‑ Organically modified montmorillonite nanoclay filler for epoxy and polyurethane polymer composites ‑ Capable of intercalation and partial exfoliation under appropriate high‑shear and thermal processing ‑ Reinforces mechanical properties including tensile strength, flexural modulus and heat‑distortion resistance of thermoset polymers ‑ Establishes tortuous diffusion pathways to lower water‑vapour and gas permeability, enhancing composite barrier performance ‑ Provides limited improvement on abrasion resistance and flame‑retardant behaviour of resin systems ‑ Good interfacial compatibility with epoxy resin, cast PU elastomer and fibre‑reinforced FRP formulations ‑ Fine free‑flowing light off‑white powder, convenient for feeding during resin compounding ‑ Reliable batch‑to‑batch consistency for engineering composite and modified thermoset resin production

Technical Specifications

‑ Product Name: OMMT Organic Modified Montmorillonite ‑ CAS Number: 68953‑58‑2 ‑ Appearance: Light off‑white fine powder ‑ Moisture: ≤3.0 % ‑ Loss on ignition: 34.0‑42.0 % ‑ Fineness (325 mesh residue): ≤1.8 % ‑ Bulk density: 0.21‑0.32 g/cm³

Application Scenarios

‑ Epoxy‑based fibre‑reinforced FRP composite parts ‑ Cast polyurethane elastomer and PU composite components ‑ Epoxy casting engineering components requiring enhanced thermal and barrier performance ‑ Modified thermoset resin formulations for advanced composite manufacturing ‑ Nanoscale reinforcing mineral filler for polymer compounding industry

Usage Recommendation

‑ Typical dosage range: 1.0‑5.0 % based on total resin formulation weight ‑ Incorporate OMMT powder into liquid resin at early mixing stage, adopt high‑shear dispersion together with controlled thermal treatment to facilitate intercalation and exfoliation of silicate layers ‑ Insufficient dispersion will leave large clay agglomerates, resulting in defective spots and reduced mechanical performance in final composite parts ‑ Run comprehensive laboratory trials to evaluate viscosity, curing behaviour, mechanical strength, heat resistance and barrier property prior to mass production ‑ Avoid excessive loading; over‑dosage causes sharp viscosity rise and impairs resin flow‑ability during casting and lamination

Package & Storage

‑ Standard packing: 25kg kraft paper bag with inner PE liner ‑ Store in cool, dry and ventilated warehouse; avoid moisture absorption and heavy compression ‑ Keep bags tightly sealed after opening to prevent moisture ingress ‑ Shelf life: 12 months under proper storage conditions

Safety Notes

‑ Avoid dust generation and inhalation during material handling; wear suitable dust mask and safety goggles. ‑ Prevent direct skin contact; chemical‑resistant gloves are required for operation. ‑ Keep away from open flame and high‑temperature heat sources. ‑ Please refer to SDS document for comprehensive guidance on handling, transportation and emergency disposal.
