Organophilic Bentonite BENTONE‑57 Equivalent CAS 68953‑58‑2 Organoclay for High‑Polar Solvent‑Based Industrial Coatings Inks

BENTONE‑57 Equivalent Organophilic Bentonite (CAS 68953‑58‑2) is surface‑modified organoclay developed as direct functional replacement for BENTONE‑57, specifically tailored for high‑polar solvent‑borne industrial coatings and printing ink systems. This grade cannot achieve optimal swelling without matched polar activator and sufficient high‑shear dispersion. After effective exfoliation of clay platelets, a reversible three‑dimensional thixotropic gel network is constructed within strongly polar

Product Overview

BENTONE‑57 Equivalent Organophilic Bentonite, CAS 68953‑58‑2, is manufactured from purified natural montmorillonite modified with organic quaternary ammonium salt. It serves as high‑quality alternative to BENTONE‑57 and is optimized for demanding high‑polar solvent‑based industrial coating and printing ink formulations. Unlike self‑activating bentonite grades, this organoclay relies on suitable polar activator combined with intensive high‑shear mixing to fully exfoliate stacked clay platelets. Once exfoliated, the silicate sheets build a reversible three‑dimensional colloidal thixotropic network. At static storage, this network suspends dense pigments, metallic powders and mineral extenders efficiently, avoiding formation of hard sediment cake inside paint and ink containers. During spraying, roller coating or high‑speed ink transfer, external shear breaks the gel network, lowering viscosity to guarantee favorable leveling and transfer properties. After application, the thixotropic network quickly rebuilds to suppress sagging and running on vertical metal substrates. The product maintains acceptable gloss of cured films and provides consistent batch‑to‑batch quality for high‑polar industrial coating and ink mass‑production.

Key Features

‑ Premium organophilic bentonite with equivalent performance to BENTONE‑57 for high‑polar solvent‑based systems ‑ Needs proper polar activator and high‑shear dispersion to realize complete clay‑platelet exfoliation and thixotropy development ‑ Outstanding anti‑settling performance for dense pigments, metallic pigments and mineral fillers during prolonged storage ‑ Effective anti‑sag capability on vertical metal surfaces, enabling moderate thick‑film build‑up for high‑polar industrial coatings ‑ Distinct shear‑thinning thixotropic behavior, balancing long‑term suspension stability and wet‑film leveling performance ‑ Good compatibility with various high‑polar resins, only minor adverse influence on surface gloss of cured coating film ‑ Fine free‑flowing light off‑white powder, convenient for feeding into industrial paint and ink production lines ‑ Reliable batch‑to‑batch consistency for continuous manufacturing of high‑polar industrial coatings and printing inks

Technical Specifications

‑ Product Name: Organophilic Bentonite BENTONE‑57 Equivalent ‑ CAS Number: 68953‑58‑2 ‑ Appearance: Light off‑white fine powder ‑ Moisture: ≤3.5 % ‑ Loss on ignition: 33.0‑41.0 % ‑ Fineness (325 mesh residue): ≤2.0 % ‑ Bulk density: 0.21‑0.32 g/cm³

Application Scenarios

‑ High‑polar solvent‑based industrial topcoats and baking finishing coatings for metal components ‑ Solvent‑based printing inks requiring anti‑settling and anti‑sag rheology control ‑ High‑polar two‑component industrial protective paint formulations ‑ Machinery and equipment finishing paints based on high‑polar resin systems ‑ Rheology‑modifying organoclay additive for high‑polar solvent‑borne coatings and inks

Usage Recommendation

‑ Typical dosage range: 0.5‑2.0 % based on total paint or ink weight ‑ Pre‑disperse organophilic bentonite together with matched polar activator in corresponding high‑polar solvent under high‑shear mixing at 40‑60℃ to prepare pre‑gel before adding resin, pigments and fillers ‑ Appropriate activator dosage plus sufficient high‑shear dispersion is essential to obtain ideal thixotropic property; insufficient activation or shear will result in weak thickening effect ‑ Perform complete laboratory pre‑evaluation covering rheology, anti‑sag, leveling, gloss and long‑term storage stability prior to mass‑scale production ‑ Excessive addition should be avoided, which will cause abnormally high viscosity and deteriorate wet‑film leveling

Package & Storage

‑ Standard packing: 25kg kraft paper bag with inner PE liner ‑ Store in cool, dry and ventilated warehouse, protect powder against moisture absorption and heavy compression ‑ Tightly seal opened bags to prevent moisture ingress ‑ Shelf life: 12 months under proper storage conditions

Safety Notes

‑ Avoid dust generation and inhalation during material handling; wear suitable dust mask and safety goggles. ‑ Prevent direct skin contact, chemical‑resistant protective gloves are required for operation. ‑ Keep away from open flame and high‑temperature heat sources. ‑ Please refer to SDS document for comprehensive guidance on handling, transportation and emergency disposal.
