Waterborne Organo‑Modified Bentonite BENTONE‑LT Equivalent CAS 68953‑58‑2 Anti‑Sag Anti‑Settling Rheology Additive for Water‑Based Coatings

Waterborne Organo‑Modified Bentonite BENTONE‑LT Equivalent (CAS 68953‑58‑2) is a surface‑modified organoclay powder developed as direct functional alternative to BENTONE‑LT, which is specially formulated for water‑based coating systems. Under moderate high‑shear dispersion within aqueous paint media, the clay platelets exfoliate and form a reversible three‑dimensional thixotropic network. At static storage, the network inhibits pigment and mineral filler sedimentation and prevents the formation

Product Overview

Waterborne Organo‑Modified Bentonite BENTONE‑LT Equivalent, CAS 68953‑58‑2, is manufactured from purified natural montmorillonite via specialized organic surface modification, serving as high‑quality replacement for BENTONE‑LT water‑grade organoclay. This rheology additive is optimized for aqueous coating systems including decorative latex paints and water‑based industrial protective coatings. Unlike solvent‑grade organophilic bentonite, this waterborne grade can achieve sufficient exfoliation under moderate high‑shear dispersion in aqueous phase without strong polar activator. After exfoliation, silicate platelets build a reversible three‑dimensional colloidal thixotropic network inside the water‑resin emulsion matrix. While stored statically, the colloidal network holds coloured pigments, mineral extenders and functional fillers in stable suspension and effectively avoids compact hard sediment. In the course of brushing, rolling or air‑assisted spraying, external shear disrupts the thixotropic gel network, reducing system viscosity to deliver desirable flow and leveling performance for wet paint film. When the coating application stops, the thixotropic structure quickly rebuilds to suppress sagging and runs on vertical walls and metal surfaces. The organo‑modified bentonite shows good compatibility with acrylic, styrene‑acrylic and polyurethane dispersions, and has limited adverse effect on final film gloss, scrub resistance and water‑resistance of cured water‑based coatings. It features consistent batch‑to‑batch quality to support continuous mass‑production of water‑borne decorative and industrial paints.

Key Features

‑ Waterborne‑grade organo‑modified bentonite, functional equivalent to BENTONE‑LT for water‑based coating formulations ‑ No strong polar activator required; moderate high‑shear dispersion realizes effective platelet exfoliation in aqueous systems ‑ Reliable anti‑settling performance for pigments and mineral fillers during long‑term paint storage ‑ Excellent anti‑sag property on vertical substrates, enabling moderate thick‑film build‑up for water‑borne coatings ‑ Typical shear‑thinning thixotropic property, balancing static suspension stability and wet‑film leveling during application ‑ Broad compatibility with various latex emulsions and aqueous resin dispersions, low negative influence on film gloss and scrub resistance ‑ Fine free‑flowing light off‑white powder, easy feeding for water‑based paint production lines ‑ Stable rheological output for large‑scale manufacturing of architectural and industrial water‑borne coatings

Application Scenarios

‑ Architectural water‑based latex decorative interior and exterior wall paints ‑ Water‑based acrylic industrial primers and intermediate coats for metal substrates ‑ Waterborne polyurethane decorative and protective topcoats ‑ Pigment‑rich water‑based anti‑corrosion industrial coatings ‑ Rheology‑modifying thickening powder for general water‑borne coating production

Usage Recommendation

‑ Typical dosage range: 0.4‑1.6 % based on total paint weight ‑ Disperse the organo‑modified bentonite powder into water or pigment grind phase under moderate high‑shear mixing before adding latex emulsion ‑ Appropriate dispersion speed and mixing time are essential for expected thixotropy; insufficient dispersion will cause poor anti‑sag and settling problems ‑ Complete laboratory pre‑formulation testing covering viscosity, anti‑sag, leveling, storage stability and final film performance prior to mass‑scale paint manufacturing ‑ Avoid over‑dosage; excessive addition will result in overly high viscosity and deteriorate wet‑film leveling property

Package & Storage

‑ Standard packing: 25kg kraft paper bag with inner PE liner ‑ Store in cool, dry and ventilated warehouse, protect powder from moisture absorption and heavy compression ‑ Tightly seal opened bags to prevent moisture ingress ‑ Shelf life: 12 months under proper storage conditions

Safety Notes

‑ Avoid dust generation and inhalation during material handling; wear suitable dust mask and safety goggles. ‑ Prevent direct skin contact; chemical‑resistant gloves are required for operation. ‑ Keep away from open flame and high‑temperature heat sources. ‑ Please refer to SDS document for comprehensive guidance on handling, transportation and emergency disposal.
