Self‑Activating Organophilic Bentonite SD‑2 CAS 68953‑58‑2 Rheology Modifier for Medium‑High Polar Solvent‑Based Paints

SD‑2 Self‑Activating Organophilic Bentonite (CAS 68953‑58‑2) is specially surface‑modified organoclay developed for medium‑high polar solvent‑based coating systems. This self‑activating grade eliminates the requirement for extra polar activator. With proper high‑shear mixing, clay platelets exfoliate and construct reversible thixotropic gel network within medium‑high polar resin‑solvent systems. It restrains sedimentation of heavy pigments and fillers, effectively prevents sagging on vertical su

Product Overview

SD‑2 Self‑Activating Organophilic Bentonite, CAS 68953‑58‑2, is manufactured from purified natural bentonite clay via surface modification with organic quaternary ammonium salts. This grade is optimized for medium‑high polar solvent‑based paint systems where conventional organoclays show insufficient swelling efficiency. Thanks to unique surface modification technology, additional polar activator is no longer necessary. Under suitable high‑shear dispersion, the stacked clay sheets exfoliate and disperse finely inside medium‑high polar resin‑solvent media, then reconstruct a reversible three‑dimensional thixotropic colloidal network. At static storage condition, the network suppresses settlement and hard sediment cake formation of dense pigments and mineral fillers. During spraying or brushing construction, shear force breaks the gel network to lower viscosity and deliver outstanding leveling. Once coating application finishes, the network rebuilds rapidly to avoid sagging on vertical surfaces. SD‑2 maintains stable gloss of finished paint film and exhibits consistent batch‑to‑batch quality for industrial paint manufacturing.

Key Features

‑ Self‑activating modification, no extra polar activator needed for medium‑high polar solvent‑based coating systems ‑ Efficient exfoliation under high‑shear dispersion to form reversible thixotropic three‑dimensional gel network ‑ Superior anti‑settling performance for high‑density pigments and mineral fillers during long‑term storage ‑ Excellent anti‑sag capacity for vertical‑surface construction, supporting moderate thick‑film application ‑ Distinct shear‑thinning behavior, balances thickening effect and surface‑leveling property ‑ Minor negative impact on coating gloss, film hardness and drying characteristics ‑ Fine free‑flowing powder, convenient for feeding in industrial paint production lines ‑ Stable rheological performance across different batches for continuous paint production

Technical Specifications

‑ Product Name: Self‑Activating Organophilic Bentonite SD‑2 ‑ CAS Number: 68953‑58‑2 ‑ Appearance: Light off‑white fine powder ‑ Moisture: ≤3.5 % ‑ Loss on ignition: 34.0‑41.0 % ‑ Fineness (325 mesh residue): ≤2.0 % ‑ Bulk density: 0.23‑0.33 g/cm³

Application Scenarios

‑ Medium‑high polar solvent‑based industrial machinery protective coatings ‑ Solvent‑based anti‑corrosion primers and intermediate coats ‑ Medium‑high polar topcoat formulations for metal substrates ‑ Heavy‑duty industrial solvent‑based paints requiring anti‑settling and anti‑sag performance ‑ Rheology control additive for medium‑high polar resin paint systems

Usage Recommendation

‑ Typical dosage range: 0.4‑1.9 % based on total paint weight ‑ Disperse SD‑2 in corresponding solvent under high‑shear mixing at 40‑60℃ to complete clay exfoliation prior to introducing resin and pigments ‑ Sufficient high‑shear dispersion is essential for optimal thixotropic performance; inadequate shear will cause insufficient thickening and poor anti‑sag result ‑ Conduct pre‑production laboratory testing for rheology, leveling, anti‑sag property and storage stability ‑ Avoid excessive addition, which may trigger undesired viscosity increase and poor leveling of wet film

Package & Storage

‑ Standard packing: 25kg kraft paper bag with inner PE liner ‑ Store in cool, dry and ventilated warehouse; protect against moisture absorption and heavy compression ‑ Seal tightly after opening the bags to prevent moisture ingress ‑ Shelf life: 12 months under proper storage conditions

Safety Notes

‑ Avoid dust generation and inhalation during handling; wear suitable dust mask and safety goggles. ‑ Prevent direct skin contact, chemical resistant gloves are required for operation. ‑ Keep away from open fire and high‑temperature heat sources. ‑ Please refer to corresponding SDS for complete guidance on handling, transportation and emergency disposal.
